Hard Water Action
The Finger Lakes offer excellent ice fishing opportunities for perch, lake trout, northern pike, and panfish. The deep, clear waters of these glacial lakes produce trophy fish throughout the winter months. Key lakes include Seneca, Cayuga, Keuka, and Canandaigua — each offering unique ice fishing experiences.
Safety is paramount when ice fishing. Always check ice thickness before venturing out — a minimum of 4 inches of clear ice is recommended for walking. Carry ice picks, wear a flotation suit, and never fish alone on early or late ice.
Target Species
- Yellow Perch: Tip-ups with small minnows near weed edges
- Lake Trout: Jigging spoons in deep water (80-120 feet)
- Northern Pike: Large suckers on tip-ups near shallow bays
Don’t forget to dress in layers and bring a portable shelter — Finger Lakes winters can be brutal but the fishing is worth it!
