Steelhead Alley
The tributaries of Lake Ontario offer world-class steelhead fishing from fall through spring. Known as Steelhead Alley, this stretch of streams from the Niagara River to the Salmon River draws anglers from across the country. These hard-fighting rainbow trout enter the streams in the fall and remain through the winter and spring, providing a long fishing season.
Popular techniques include float fishing with egg patterns, swinging streamers, and indicator nymphing. The Salmon River in Pulaski is the most famous destination, but smaller streams like Sandy Creek, Irondequoit Creek, and Eighteen Mile Creek offer excellent fishing with fewer crowds.
Seasonal Patterns
- October-November: Peak fall run
- December-February: Winter steelhead — fewer fish but less pressure
- March-April: Spring drop-back fishing
Check water levels before heading out — steelhead fishing is best when flows are moderate and water clarity is good.
